ZPO CHIEF CONDUCTOR VJEKOSLAV SUTEJ DIED
Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra chief conductor Vjekoslav Šutej died on 2 December 2009. after a long illness. Sutej led orchestras in Austria, Germany, USA, Italy and Spain and worked with many opera stars like Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Montserrat Caballe. In the late 1980s Sutej was art director of the Hollybush Festival in New Jersey. He later worked as art director of the Gran Teatro Fenice in Venice, and of the Houston Grand Opera in Texas. He was a Vienna State Opera conductor and led four Christmas concerts with Domingo and Carreras.MILJENKO PULJIC NOMINATED FOR ANOTHER TERM AS ZPO MANAGING DIRECTOR The Zagreb City Council The Zagreb nominated the present managing director of the Zagreb Philharmonijc Orchestra Miljenko Puljic for another term. The City Council ’s decision was preceded by the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra Board decision and Orchestra members’ voting where Miljenko Puljic got 51 votes and his concurrent Davor Reba 39 votes.
LONG APPLAUSE FOR ZAGREB PHILHARMONIC AT SOLD OUT Sunday, November 8th, 2009, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra had a very successful performance at one of the world’s most prestigious concert halls – Musikverein’s Golden Hall in Vienna, as a part of the 5th festival of the Croatian music in Vienna.

The Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra appeared for the first time at the Golden Hall of The Musikverein in December 2002 under the baton of maestro Vjekoslav Sutej. Winners of Chopin competition will perform with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra The project coordinator of the project Fryderyk Chopin 2010, Monika Strugala, visited Zagreb with her husband, renowned Polish conductor Tadeusz Strugala. At a joint meeting with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra’s managing director Miljenko Puljic, they agreed that the winners of the Fryderyk Chopin competition will perform as soloists with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra. The international competition Fryderyk Chopin is the most prestigious piano competition in the world. It was founded in 1927 and since 1955 it has been held every five years. In the year 2010 the Fryderyk Chopin Institute will celebrate with special programme the 200th birth anniversary of the most famous Polish composer.The Porin award to the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra for the best classical music album The leading Croatian award in discography Porin, in 2009 was given to the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra for the recording of the Third piano concerto and The violin concerto by Boris Papandopulo, under the direction of Pavle Dešpalj and will the pianist Dalibor Cikojević and violinist Sidonija Lebar as soloists. LEOPOLD HAGER CONDUCTING A CONCERT WITH MARTIN GABRIEL ON OBOE The concert in the White octave series of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra on Friday, January 15th, 2010, was conducted by Leopold Hager, for many years chief conductor of the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg and chief conductor of the Volksoper in Vienna. Soloist was the first oboe player of the Vienna Philharmonic – Martin Gabriel. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 254th birth anniversary is taking place in January this year. For that occasion, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra had prepared a programme dedicated to the genius from Salzburg. The programme included: W. A. Mozart: SYMPHONY No. 35 in D major, K. 385, Haffner TRADITIONAL ZAGREB PHILHARMONIC BALL Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at 8.30 PM, at the V. Lisinski concert hall, the traditional Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra’s Philharmonic Ball was held under the direction of Benjamin Wallfisch. CHRISTMAS CONCERT WITH JOSÉ CARRERAS AT THE ZAGREB ARENA ![]() Saturday, December 19th, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Ivo Lipanovic, performed a charity concert at the Zagreb Arena with one of the world’s most renowned tenors, José Carreras. Other performers were the Irish soprano Celine Byrne, Tony Cetinski, SCAA choir Ivan Goran Kovacic, Girls’ choir Zvjezdice and others.
DENYCE GRACE PERFORMED AS SOLOIST, IVO LIPANOVIC CONDUCTED Friday, December 11th 2009, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, performed in a Blue Octave concert conducted by Ivo Lipanovic. The world famous mezzosoprano Denyce Graves performed as soloist. The programme included arias by F.Cilea, C.Saint-Saëns, S.Barber, G.Bizet and gospel. Friday, December 4th 2009, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra performed in a Blue Octave concert conducted by Schlomo Mintz, while Monika Leskovar was the soloist on the cello. Friday, November 20th, 2009 at the V. Lisinski Concert Hall the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra had a gala-concert by the Lovro & Lilly Matacic Fund, for the 110th birth anniversary of Lovro pl. Matacic. MICHAL DWORZINSKY and CHI-BUN JIMMY CHIANG conducted the orchestra and the soprano ANNE BAXTER was the soloist.

EAST WEST ACOUSTIC PROJECT ZF CONCERT AT THE NATIONAL LIBRARY HALL
The Concerts for night birds series of the Acoustic Project ZF ensemble continued with the East West concert on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 21.21 at the Croatian National Library hall in Zagreb.

The concert in the Blue Octave series planned for September 25th was held on October 23rd at 7.30 pm at Lisinski Hall. The orchestra was directed by Pavle Despalj, Juho Pohjonen was the soloist on the piano. The programme includes works of Papandopulo, Shostakovich and Brahms.
